Clinical Communication and Learning Development
Activities
The Clinical Communication and Learning Development Program is a Faculty program to assist students with the language and learning requirements of their chosen health science discipline. The CCLD also helps students to overcome possible obstacles to learning such as gaps in English language proficiency, educational differences, and cultural factors so that they can achieve success in their academic programs.
The CCLD offers regular workshops and tutorials on campus and at the Faculty’s clinical sites. Activities offered by the CCLD include:
- assignment and research writing lectures
- course based Boost programs to develop students' health science literacy, academic English, and writing skills including structuring assignments and developing arguments, developing critical analysis skills (writing, analysing the literature), and developing academic vocabulary. Boost programs provide students with opportunities to practise and develop academic skills in a supportive, non-assessed environment.
- a limited number of individual appointments
- clinical communication skills development including student-patient communication practice, OSCE practice, bedside observation, colloquial and clinical language development, clinical case presentation practice
The CCLD is part of the Medical Education Unit in the Melbourne Medical School.
Background
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences established the International Student Support Program in 1997 under the directorship of Professor Lesleyanne Hawthorne as part of the Faculty International Unit. The ISSP was established in order to address the language and cross cultural learning needs of the growing number of international students in the Faculty. In 2008 the ISSP became part of the Medical Education Unit. The program has been renamed the Clinical Communication and Learning Development Program to reflect its educational approach and teaching scope.
