Curriculum Planning
Graduates of The University of Melbourne's new medical course will be awarded an MD which will reflect a higher level qualification (Masters Level) than the current MBBS. The curriculum of the new course will, therefore, need to reflect this higher academic standard while maintaining the excellent outcomes of the current medical course. The first differentiating feature of the new MD will be the requirement of prior knowledge in the disciplines of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. The course will build on prior knowledge allowing an opportunity to provide greater depth and breadth to the program.
The medical curriculum development plan begins with reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of our current course, a scholarly analysis of the medical educational literature and the curricula of benchmark medical schools in Australia and around the world. This work will be performed by the Medical Education Unit and then brought to the key stakeholders in a series of workshops focusing on areas including graduate attributes, selection, curriculum and assessment/evaluation. This analysis will then form the basis for building the structure and curriculum of the new graduate medical course.
