Graduate Attributes: It's all about relationships

The third curriculum workshop in the MD Development process focused on the graduate attributes of the new MD program.

Prior to this workshop a concept mapping process had been undertaken by an external consultant to develop a graduate attributes framework. Seven groups were involved in this concept mapping process and a secondary reference group collated the results and further developed the framework. This framework was presented in full at the workshop. The workshop aims were to refine the framework and its accosiated attributes in light of a vision for the new course.

Participants were all members of one (or more) of the five curriculum committees coordinating the current MBBS program (Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, Health Practice, Advanced Medical Science (AMS) and Medical Course Committees) and/or members of the Melbourne Medical School Executive. In addition three clinicians from each of the four clinical schools were invited to participate. Participants were provided with a selection of prereading materials one week prior to the workshop.

The workshop began with a series of presentations outlining the progress of the MD development and the principles and definitions relating to graduate attributes. The concept mapping process results and the refinement process were also presented.

Workshop participants discussed the framework in small groups, examining the attributes in detail and reporting back with results.

In the afternoon participants worked in small groups to develop the "vision" of the new MD, refining a vision statement produced by a previous focus group.

A summary report of the workshop is now available.
