Curriculum Planning Workshop 4
Effective Clinical Teaching: Brainstorming an Approach for the 21st Century
The fourth curriculum workshop in the MD Development process was a brainstorming session to consider the options for the optimal delivery of clinical teaching in phase 2 of the course.
Workshop participants were provided with information about the clinical course structures of many of the top medical schools in the world and some scholarly papers examining options for clinical training.
Participants were all members of one (or more) of the five curriculum committees coordinating the current MBBS program (Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, Health Practice, Advanced Medical Science (AMS) and Medical Course Committees) and/or members of the Melbourne Medical School Executive. In addition three clinicians from each of the four clinical schools were invited to participate.
The workshop began with a presentation outlining the progress of the MD development and addressing the various issues of contemporary clinical training. The workshop considered "continuity" of experience and learning as a theme from a student and patient perspective. The workshop did not aim for consensus but to collate a broad range of possible models for clinical training in the new MD.
Workshop participants worked in small groups to consider the ideal structure for the delivery of clinical teaching in phase two of the new MD program to deliver a student to a broad summative examination at the end of year 3 of the course.
Participants then reconvened and each group presented the results of their discussions.
A summary report of the workshop is now available.
