Curriculum Planning Workshop 5
Phase 1 and the Principles of Assessment
The fifth curriculum workshop in the MD Development process incorporated an information session on the progress of Phase 1 to date followed by a consideration of the principles of assessment to be adopted in the MD, and a more in depth consideration of assessment tools and structure for Phase 1.
Workshop participants were provided with materials covering theoretical perpectives and research on assessment in medical education.
Participants were all members of one (or more) of the five curriculum committees coordinating the current MBBS program (Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, Health Practice, Advanced Medical Science (AMS) and Medical Course Committees) and/or members of the Melbourne Medical School Executive. In addition three clinicians from each of the four clinical schools were invited to participate.
The workshop began with a presentation outlining the progress of the development of Phase 1 to date. Dr Jenny Hayes (Anatomy and Cell Biology) and Ms Sandra Uren (Microbiology and Immunology) provided examples of how anatomy and microbiology would be delivered in the Phase 1 program.
Professor Gordon Page (University of British Columbia) gave an introduction to current best practice in medical student assessment. Associate Professor Agnes Dodds (Medical Education Unit) followed with a presentation on the local context.
Workshop participants worked in small groups to design an assessment template for Phase 1 and to consider several assessment-related questions.
Participants then reconvened and each group reported on the main points of their discussions and the scribes prepared more detailed reports which form the basis of the summary report.
