Phase 2: Principles of Clinical Practice

The sixth curriculum workshop in the MD Development process examined the principles for the development of Phase 2 and a draft Phase 2 framework.

Participants were all members of one (or more) of the five curriculum committees coordinating the current MBBS program (Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, Health Practice, Advanced Medical Science (AMS) and Medical Course Committees) and/or members of the Melbourne Medical School Executive. In addition three clinicians from each of the four clinical schools were invited to participate. Participants were provided with a selection of prereading materials one week prior to the workshop.

The workshop began with a presentation outlining the progress of the MD development and the conclusions from workshop 5, which examined the principles of assessment as well as the early draft of Phase 1. The workshop then examined the principles for the development of Phase 2 developed in workshop 4 and a draft Phase 2 framework.

Workshop participants worked in small groups to consider the detail of each proposed term in the first year of Phase 2, reconvening to present the results of their discussions.

In the afternoon participants again worked in small groups to consider the second year of Phase 2.

A summary report of the workshop is now available.
