Phase 4: Transition to Practice
The eighth and final curriculum workshop in the MD Development process considered phase 4, the final semester of the proposed new course. The workshop also reviewed the existing final semester of the current course and to seek improvements that could be implemented immediately.
Workshop participants were provided with a selection of prereading materials one week prior to the workshop.
Participants consisted primarily of university academic staff and clinical teachers, including representatives from Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria, Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges and Victorian Public Hospitals Medical Directors. In addition, student representatives attended presenting their perspective on the current final semester.
The workshop began with a presentation outlining the progress of the MD development to date and an overview of the local and international pedagogical philosophies underpinning capstone subjects and transition to professional practice.
Dr Sarah Mansfield, a recent graduate, reflected on her own experiences as an intern within the current course followed on by Dr David Smallwood presenting the hospital consultant’s expectations of their interns.
The workshop then examined the proposed structure of the final phase and rationale behind each of the three rotations. With student representatives acting as facilitators, workshop participants worked in small groups to consider this proposed structure and to determine the learning objectives, activities and assessment strategies.
The afternoon session began with presentations on the current Semester 12 program and evaluation data. Participants then broke into small groups to consider what improvements might be introduced immediately, or in the near future.
