Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Road Show

‘An “OSCE Road Show” has been developed by the MEU as part of the Equity and Fairness in Clinical Examinations project, which is funded by a Learning and Teaching Performance Fund grant. It is currently being presented at Medical Grand Rounds at various metropolitan hospitals with plans to take it to both Surgical Grand Rounds and rural locations (dates to follow).

The project is led by Ms Agnes Dodds and involves Dr David Smallwood in his role as Medical Education Fellow within the Medical Education Unit.  The OSCE Road Show is designed to inform clinicians of the rigour and educational principles involved in the writing of OSCEs. It also seeks to inform current and future examiners of the importance of examiner training, and to reduce examiner variability.  Apart from learning the key theoretical and practical elements of the OSCE, the audience view a DVD of an actual OSCE station with all attendees having the opportunity to mark the student; this has created lively discussion and debate.  The road show has already been attended by over 400 people at the Austin, Royal Melbourne and St Vincent’s hospitals, receiving extremely positive feedback.

Feedback from these sessions will be used by the project team to help develop examiner training materials for clinical examinations for medical students.
