Upcoming Seminar: Ilana Rischin Oration – “Doctor - Patient Communication In Hospital Emergency Departments: Contextual Complexity & Competing Discourses”
The number and complexity of presentations to Emergency Departments (EDs) has increased exponentially because
of the ageing demographic of most Western world populations, alongside co‐morbidities of modern lifestyles, such
as diabetes, smoking and drug‐related illnesses. Consequently the ‘work’ that communication is required to do in this
context is increasing exponentially – the possibility of communicative discontinuities, misunderstandings and
breakdowns is on the rise. Ineffective communication is now identified as the major cause of critical incidents in
acute care services (NSW Health 2005; Rhodes et al 2004). Poor communication is the catalyst for most patient
complaints ‐ sometimes leading to litigation (NHMRC 2004; NSW Health Complaints Commission 2005; Taylor et al
2002).
