Professor Geoff McColl

Geoff McColl is the Director of the Medical Education Unit in the Melbourne Medical School and Professor of Medical Education and Training at the University of Melbourne. Geoff is a graduate of the University of Melbourne completing an MB, BS and BMedSci in 1985. After graduation he completed his internship, residency and basic physician training at the Repatriation and Austin Hospitals and then entered the rheumatology advanced training program and was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1992.

Geoff then completed a PhD at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute examining antigen-specific immune responses in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis. He was appointed senior lecturer in the Centre for Rheumatic Diseases at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1995 where he examined the efficacy of patient self management programs and coordinated trials of new drugs for the treatment of patients with arthritis.

In 2001, Geoff was appointed Clinical Dean at the Royal Melbourne Hospital/ Western Hospital Clinical School where he coordinated the development and implementation of the clinical teaching curriculum of the University of Melbourne. In 2006, Geoff added the responsibilities of Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to his duties and in this role he coordinated the Faculty’s coursework programs. Geoff completed a Master of Education in 2008 which examined how clinician educators teach diagnostic reasoning to medical students.

In addition to these University roles Geoff is a practicing rheumatologist, current President of the Australian Rheumatology Association (ARA) and a member of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC). His attention is currently focused on the development of the new University of Melbourne graduate medical program and continuing his research in the area of diagnostic reasoning.
