MCQ Scanning
The Medical Education Unit provides a multiple choice question scanning service for use by schools and departments of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
The OpScan 4 OMR scanner is used to scan Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) responses from quizzes, examinations or surveys and to provide a number of statistical reports on the results for each scan batch.
5 Steps to lodging a scan request
- Logging a request
- Receiving confirmation and stationery
- Submission of MCQ answer sheets for processing
- Return of MCQ sheets and statistical reports
- Charging
1. Logging a request
Departments log a request using the online requisition form.
Where possible, requests should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the date of the test or survey.
2. Receiving confirmation and stationery
The MEU provides an email confirmation to the contact person listed on the requisition form, plus a cost estimate, followed by the required number of MCQ answer sheets (1-100 Questions, A-E Response) [JPG, 182KB].
For collection of MCQ paper, please come to:
Medical Education Unit (MEU) Reception
Level 7, North Wing, Medical Building
Office Hours are 8:45am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday
3. Submission of MCQ answer sheets for processing
After the examination/survey, clients must provide the MEU Reception with:
- A writable CD or disk for the recording of results and statistical reports. The MEU will not provide disks.
- MCQ sheets to be scanned.
- Master answer sheet (if applicable). For exams and tests, one MCQ sheet must be labelled “Master Answer Sheet” and have the correct answer/s filled in for each question. The master answer sheet must be delivered on top of the MCQ sheets.
All of the MCQ sheets (including the master answer sheet) must be handled according to the following instructions:
- Write the subject code in the space provided (if applicable)
- Fill in the ovals on the MCQ paper using a black (preferably 2B) pencil
- Do NOT use pen
- Do not bend or fold the form
- Carefully and completely erase any mistakes (liquid paper is also permissible)
The machine is only able to safely read specialised paper, and will not read photocopies. The scanner will not accurately read anything but the stationery provided.
4.Return of MCQ sheets and statistical reports
The MEU will endeavour to meet a maximum three-day turnaround for the scanning of MCQ answer sheets, the retrieval of test/survey results (which are exported to an Excel spreadsheet using special software called Exam Systems II) and the production of statistical reports.
Example statistical reports:
If the scanned MCQ papers have not been collected on the date that is noted on the online requisition form, the department contact will receive a reminder phone call.
5. Charging
Departments will be issued with a ‘charge out’ for the scan job at the end of the month when the scan job took place.
Cost estimates:
- Stationery: $12c per page: $12 per 100 pack, $36 per 300 pack
- Machine Maintenance Fee: $15 per request
